“Over an 11-year NFL career, Rob Ninkovich went from an undrafted free agent to a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots. Central to that journey was his relationship with his medical team, including the renowned Head Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Gill.
In this episode, they join hosts Andrew Rizza and Dr. Cameron Roth for an inside look at the physical and mental demands of a professional football career, as well as the evolving culture of athlete care.
Dr. Gill offers the surgeon’s perspective on balancing an athlete’s career demands with long-term health, while Rob shares his personal journey of overcoming a major knee injury, the mental toll of career-threatening injuries like this one, and the importance of athlete-doctor trust. They discuss the influence of agents on recovery, the impact of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) on college athletes, and what it takes to build championship-winning teams. Rob also explains his personal “availability over ability” philosophy and how he decided when and how to retire on his own terms.
This conversation is a deep dive into what it takes mentally, physically, and financially to achieve and sustain greatness in the NFL and well into retirement.”
Why some doctors are choosing a long-lasting injection to reduce opioid use and ease recovery after surgery.
“The number of surgeries in the United States rises each year, with over 92 million performed in 2024.1 For many patients, surgery is only half the battle. Managing pain afterward is often the greater challenge.
Opioids were once the go-to solution for surgical pain relief, but unwanted side effects like nausea, dizziness, constipation and the potential risk of dependence and misuse have led both patients and health care providers to seek safer, more effective alternatives that support a smoother recovery.2″
A Non-Opioid Approach
“Each year, millions of Americans undergo orthopedic procedures like shoulder and knee surgeries to relieve pain and restore movement. For many patients, the biggest challenge comes when they leave the operating room, as orthopedic surgeries are often associated with severe post-operative pain. Until recently, many of my patients would wake up in the middle of the night after their traditional nerve block wore off. Suddenly in pain and playing catch-up with medication, they experienced high stress, delayed rehab, and in some cases, dependence on narcotic painkillers.”
“Last year, more than 30 million orthopedic surgical procedures were performed on adults in the United States, including procedures addressing rotator cuff tears, joint instability in the shoulder, and ligament injuries in the knee, like ACL and meniscus tears. These procedures are essential for restoring mobility and empowering patients to return to their normal activities, but they can be notoriously painful in the days after surgery. Developing an effective pain management plan is critical to getting patients back to the things that matter most, sooner.”

Both major injuries resulted in having patellar tendon realignment surgeries on both knees that caused him to miss two seasons of football and one baseball season. Dr. Thomas Gill — orthopedic surgeon for many Red Sox, Patriot, and Bruins players — performed both procedures at Mass General Hospital in Boston.
